What holds the sterndrive down during operation? ?

I have a 1989 sun runner with a Penta Volvo DP, when set it in reverse the sterndrive lifts it self up and when in forward the sterndrive appears to be in a non secured possition. How can I solve this problem?

This model of the duo-prop, didn’t have the hydraulic cylinders like they do now. It was the 290 drive with a rev. latching mechanism. This mechanical system depended on the electric tilt motor to retract fully so that the latch push rod could come all the way up, allowing the latching paws to engage a trim adjustment rod. It was designed to “break-away” if you hit something. However if you tried to raise the drive to operate is shallow water, the latch linkage rod could get bent, which is a long way of saying the drive can pop-up in reverse. Often a mechanic that knows the system can straighten the rod and adjust the mechanical latch. But, the first time the operator runs the drive in the partly tilted position, it’s bent again. So, get it fixed then be sure you know how to operate the tilt mechanism. Good luck!
